Going on your first cruise is one of the most fabulous experiences you will ever have! My first cruise was way back in the mid-1970's, which you may know as "The Love Boat" era! Cruise ships at that time were small and usually re-purposed from ocean liners. I still remember the anticipation of travelling to the cruise terminal in Fort Lauderdale and stepping aboard the ship for the first time! Back in those days, there were official "bon voyage" sail-aways, where you would throw paper streamers and confetti and wave to everyone onshore as the ship sailed away.
Things that we never thought about, were figured out pretty quickly. Those things are still common to this day! One of those things is how hot the surface of an outdoor sun deck can be. When wet, they can also be quite slippery, so remember to pack some comfortable water-friendly footwear. The sun reflecting on the deck also can bring on a sunburn. As many times as I've advised people to bring sunscreen and aloe relief gel, there will always be several "lobsters" walking around on the first or second sea day and we haven't even made it to our first port yet! The other thing is seasickness. The newer ships all sailing today have stabilizers, which greatly minimizes motion sickness. However, we cannot always predict the weather conditions or whether you will be impacted by seasickness. For that reason, it's good to get an anti-nausea patch. Other things that help include wrist bands, anti-nausea medicine, and ginger candies.
What are the limits on luggage?
On cruise ships, there are no limits on luggage, so you a free to bring as much as you can carry. However, bear in mind that you will need to find a place inside the cabin to store all of the extra suitcases, and then, have to re-pack everything at the end of the cruise. Some of us like to bring extra outfits, to have options. Shoes can take up a bit of room too. Others travel very sparsely, with only a carry-on. Your travel style is up to you! There is also laundry services onboard which are an extra fee.
Can I bring snacks, sodas, etc. onboard?
Always consult your cruise line as to their policies regarding bringing beverages such as sodas and wine onboard. Items such as protein drinks for medical reasons are also allowed. You will never go hungry on a cruise ship, as there are ample dining options, however, if you are traveling with children, or crave that particular candy or chips, you can bring that too. Make sure items are in original packages and are unopened. It is also helpful to bring a re-usable cup with a straw onboard. If you want more variety than the free beverage options provided, feel free to bring flavored water enhancers.
What's the big deal about the muster station?
A muster station is where all crew and passengers must go in case of an emergency. Knowing where your muster station is and checking in is mandatory. It's best to do this when you first board the ship and then you can grab that drink from the bar or dive into the pool or food options. Cruise lines have made this process very easy, however it is different from cruise line to cruise line. Remember, the ship cannot sail until everyone has checked in, so be sure you have done so.
Important reminders
Make sure you have your boarding pass, US government identification, luggage tags, and any other travel documents as advised by your travel agent.
Give yourself enough time to make it to the cruise terminal. It is always recommended if you are flying, to fly in the night before to eliminate potential travel delays or flight cancellations.
Don't forget to pack important items in your carry-on. There will be porters at the terminal, so you can leave your heavy luggage with them and it will be delivered to your room by the first evening onboard. Double check that you have your prescriptions, glasses/ reading glasses, cell phones, phone chargers, power banks, charging cables, and a change of clothes in your carry-on. Packing cubes are great for organizing items you will use onboard, not just clothes!
Lastly!
I'm so excited you have decided to take your first cruise! I promise you it will be an experience like you have never imagined. For those still deciding, we are happy to help you select cruise lines, ships, and itineraries based on your preferences and lifestyle.
Have a fabulous cruise and bon voyage!
